April 2008 - Fundraising News

We are still trying to raise funds to complete the building of the band store room. Donations and/or sponsorship offers are most welcome. Please contact Val for more information.

April 2008 - Harrogate Flower Show

Despite the poor weather, the band attended Harrogate Flower Show. The senior band were joined by members of the junior band for the first concert of the Spring/Summer season. Well done to Jade and William of the junior band for performing their solo pieces in public for the first time.

June 2007 - Principal Cornet Wanted

Due to the unfortunate resignation of Su Sharpe - our principal cornet for several years, we are looking for a Principal Cornet player. This position would suit someone who is either retired from contesting or is taking a break from contesting and is looking to continue playing. For more information please contact Val or our musical director, Judith Beatty.

June 2007 - Summer Engagements

The band has a quite hectic list of engagements for the forthcoming summer period, including Barnsley Mayor's Parade and entertaining at Brodsworth Hall, Wentworth Castle and Clifton Park. A full list can be found here. Please come along and show your support. We look forward to seeing you.

April 2007 - Cawthorne Re-United

A reunion of Cawthorne Band members was held earlier in March. This took the form of an open rehearsal with refreshments throughout the afternoon at Cawthorne Village Hall. The event was highly successful, it was great to see some familiar faces and a few past members have rejoined the band.

If you know of any past players who may be interested in joining please email the contact names, numbers or addresses to webmaster@cawthorneband.wanadoo.co.uk.

January 2007 - Christmas Fundraising

The band enjoyed a sucessful festive system with over £1000 pounds being raised from the carolling in local public houses. The Christmas concert held in conjuntion with the church choir raised a significant sum towards the building of the new band store room at the village hall. Work on the foundations has now begun and we look forward to more fundraising events later in the year.

November 2006 - Junior Band

We would like to welcome three new players to the Junior Band. William, Brendan and Rhiannon are Jenny’s current protégés and have been a welcome addition to the band.

We now have players on horn and baritone as well as cornets and the band sounds like an ensemble.

The band is also beginning to work on a few carols, which we hope to play at one of the Christmas concerts.

Band Room Required

Sadly, Cawthorne Band has had to move out of the village of Cawthorne because of the lack of suitable rehearsal premises with adquate storage room for all the Band’s equipment.

For many years we have used the school room at Cawthorne Chapel for our practices, but unfortunately the storage space which is available here is no longer adequate for the Band's needs.

A project to build a store room at Cawthorne Village Hall was started in the summer of 2004 with the intention of moving rehearsals to the Village Hall too and thus getting everything under one roof. Funding was secured which enabled plans to be drawn up and planning permission granted, but unfortunately attempts to raise the £15,000 which is needed to actually carry out the building work have had limited success.

Other fund raising options are now being investigated, but in the meantime, the Band has had to make the decision to move to premises in the nearby village of Silkstone Common, which offer the practice room and storage space which is needed.

It is very much hoped that this will be a temporary move and that Cawthorne Brass Band can return to its own village in the near future.

Cawthorne Team up with Sellers International

Cawthorne Band is proud to have formed an association with the Sellers International Band which has recently resulted in the release of a CD, One Breath, recorded by Sellers and sponsored by Cawthorne.

The project began four years ago when a millennium community drama by the Grass Roots Theatre Company about the history of the village of Cawthorne took to the stage. The play, One Breath, was written by local resident Sylvia le Breton and it included music written by Stephen Byrne. One of the members of Cawthorne Brass Band, Richard Northern, was so captivated by the music that he wanted to have it arranged for brass band, so that Cawthorne Band could play it.

Richard tried various avenues to get the music arranged, and eventually after a chance conversation with David Armitage, chairman of Sellers International, the idea developed of having the music arranged and an actual recording made by Sellers under the baton of Phillip McCann.

Grants for the project were obtained from Awards for All and Barnsley MBC’s Area Forum Community Support Fund. Sellers' resident composer, Andy Duncan was commissioned to arrange the musicand the recording was then made by Sellers International.

One Breath CD

The CD and sheet music are now available. If you would like to purchase a CD (Price £8) please email cawthorneband@blueyonder.co.uk

Sellers International Brass Band gave the world premiere live performance of the One Breath music at a concert in Barnsley on Saturday 12th February, once again sponsored by Cawthorne Brass Band. The concert was well attended on a wet and blustery night and the audience was treated to an excellent performance of all the music on the One Breath CD in the first half of the concert. Andy Duncan conducted the band himself and Phillip McCann played principal cornet.

Prominent guests who attended the concert were the Mayor and Mayoress of Barnsley, Stephen Byrne and Sylvia le Breton. Also Nigel Horne and Eric Jessop were there. Both are former conductors of Cawthorne Band and arrangements of some of their music is included on the CD and was performed during the concert.
