Summer 2006 - The Band enjoyed a wonderful afternoon at Brodsworth Hall

Cawthorne Brass Band is a non-contesting traditional village band, which has existed since 1873. It is a self-funding band, raising money from member subscriptions, engagements at fetes, galas, church services etc. plus a number of formal concerts. The Band undertakes about twenty engagements every year, mainly within the Barnsley area, but there are also a number of prestigious annual engagements outside the area such as Harrogate Flower Festival.

The members of the Band have chosen not to take part in brass band contests. Many have contested in the past but now want to continue making music without this pressure. Others have work or family committments which would not allow them to take part in contests. However, the Band still strives for a high standard of playing and the conductor has been successful in choosing music which is both challenging and enjoyable to play and the Band is always well received at its public performances.

We have always encouraged new players, both young and not so young, to join the Band and anyone is welcome to come to a rehearsal to play or just to listen if they want to. Thanks to grants from the National Lottery and the Foundation for Sport and The Arts, we were able to buy a full set of new instruments a few years ago, which allows us to offer an instrument on free loan to every player who needs one. As with all brass bands, it is a constant battle to maintain a full complement of players, and new players, particularly those who have some experience, are always welcome to join.
